Last week, Oxford-based Rhodes Must Fall activist Ntokozo Qwabe wrote a truthful note on a bill in a restaurant in Cape Town. He refused to tip a white waitress that served him, and wrote instead, “(w)e will give tip when you return the land,” reducing the white waitress to tears.
While this has been deemed by whites and non-whites as a “racist” act, the Black First Land First Movement (BLF) commends the black disobedience of Qwabe and loudly proclaims that Blacks Can’t Be Racist! The note was brilliant and truthful. Whites have still not returned the land stolen when they violently colonised our people in 1652 and beyond. The message of Qwabe is deeply offensive only to those who refuse to acknowledge this fact.
After the white-owned liberal media took on the story, labeling Qwabe a racist and a bully, we saw whites and brain-washed blacks donating more than R140 000 to the white waitress – this, in a country where black waiters and waitresses receive subhuman treatment from both customers and their bosses every single day. Black pain is the norm and white tears cause wide spread ‘shock’.
As a black consciousness movement we identify with Qwabe’s kind of transgression. However, we must remember the real battle has to take a societal change so that whiteness doesn’t reconstitute itself each time we act on it as individuals. As black people, we need to collectively and consistently fight for the return of the land. With sheer force we must all shout, Land First!
We need more of these acts of antagonism against whiteness as an expression of the political and economic fight for land return by any means necessary.
