BLF asks SASSA to take the poor seriously

Black First Land First (BLF) is partially relieved that the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has now admitted that its criteria and process around the Special Covid-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant prejudices the poor.

It’s shocking administrative injustice that up to 70% of the people whose applications were rejected had actually qualified for the grant. SASSA is nonchalant and blase’ about the lives of the poor – no apology, no sense of urgency.

It’s almost 100 days of hunger into the Covid-19 crisis for the poor. BLF notes that the admission of SASSA is a reaction to the official complaint that we have lodged with the Office of the Public Protector. We have received over 2000 complaints which has been consolidated into a complaint against SASSA. BLF is waiting for a response from the Public Protector. However, if no response is received by the end of this week, BLF shall visit the Office of the Public Protector next week to seek clarity on progress.
